Getting started

You fell from the sky onto Numa, a giant whale that flies through the clouds. Finrest, the town on her back, is where everyone starts. Talk to people, take their quests, and head out through the gates to hunt.

Places

Every place is somewhere on Numa. Press O (or the little map on the minimap) for the world map: Numa from the side with every place pinned, you as the coral pin, and the places still to come greyed out. The minimap (top right, N folds it) shows the map you're on; on a very wide or very tall map (The Spout) it shows the part around you and follows you.

Training Yard

Fin Cliffs

Levels 8–15 · A hunting ground.

A plan of Fin Cliffs

Numa's back decks planks gates people monsters wind

Monsters: Snapnacle (16), Gullet (6)
Gates to: Cloud Gardens, Belly Reef, Stormtail
Wind: in the gaps between the cliffs it blows in gusts (white streaks): while you're in the air there it pushes you sideways, with you or against you. Standing on a deck, it doesn't.
Elite: Snapnacle now and then (Elites)

The Spout

Levels 20–26 · A hunting ground.

A plan of The Spout

Numa's back decks planks gates people monsters fountains

People: Fen
Monsters: Spoutling (11), Driplet (6)
Gates to: Finrest
Fountains: they spray in a steady rhythm (bubbling a moment before). Step into a pool while it sprays and it launches you straight up to the deck above; letting go of Jump doesn't cut it short, and missing the deck never hurts. Ropes down the side lead back. Spoutlings live in the pools.
Elite: Spoutling now and then (Elites)

Stormtail

Levels 24–30 · A hunting ground.

A plan of Stormtail

Numa's back decks planks gates people monsters

People: Corra
Monsters: Thunder Ray (6), Static Sprite (11)
Gates to: Fin Cliffs
Storm: rain comes in showers, with lightning and thunder. In a shower a gust crosses the map for about 7 seconds (it shows 2 seconds before): with it you're 25% faster, against it 30% slower. The storm never hurts you. Hide behind a ridge from a Thunder Ray's bolt.
Elite: Thunder Ray now and then (Elites)

Barnacle Throne

The Barnacle King · Levels 25–30 · A hunting ground.

A plan of Barnacle Throne

Numa's back decks planks gates people monsters

Monsters: The Barnacle King (1), Snapnacle (5)
Gates to: Belly Reef
The boss: the Barnacle King, the season's last fight. The gate opens from level 25.
  • Your own room for your party (or for you alone). His HP: 360,000 alone, +75% for each more player.
  • He comes out when your whole party is in, or when someone presses Summon the King. Then the 10-minute timer starts, and nobody else can come in until it ends.
  • Faint and you come back outside, by the gate in Belly Reef: walk back in while your party fights. If everyone faints or time runs out, it starts over.
  • Phase 1: a coral line shows where his claw will slam: jump the shockwave, or get behind him. Snapnacles come now and then (up to 4).
  • Phase 2, below 65%: walls of Static roll along the floor on the music's beat: jump them.
  • Phase 3, below 30%: faster, slams twice, more Snapnacles. Hits on his glowing back do 50% more.
  • Your own loot if you hit him: 300–400 Shells, 12–18 Notes, 6–10 Shards, 1–2 Tuning Forks and a Throne piece for your class (rare 60%, epic 35%, legendary 5%). Your first win each week: epic or better. Up to 3 wins a day.
  • Your first win ends season one and gives the King's Crown Keepsake.
  • The Static-touched King, weekly after your first win: 2× HP, hits 1.5× as hard, 15% faster, enraged below 40%. Loot epic 80% or legendary 20%, 2× the Shells, Shards and Forks.

Keepsakes

A Keepsake is a memory of something you did, worn in its own slot (under your stats in the Bag, I), which shows once you have one. Keepsakes are kept for good: never sold, dropped or forged. Each adds a small bonus, and while you wear it your name shows it to everyone: a little icon before your name, your name in gold with a teal outline, and now and then a music note rising from it. Take it off and your name looks as before.

The King's Crown

The King's Crown

+5% Boss damage, +2% Damage

The Barnacle King's crown. The Static in it has gone quiet; now it hums Numa's song. While you wear it, your name shows you brought the song back.

Given once, for your first win over the Barnacle King.

Classes

Everyone starts as a Drifter. At level 10 you choose one of four classes, each taught by a mentor in Finrest.

Skills go on keys 1-6 (L opens the skill window). They open at levels 10, 13, 15, 18 and 22, and point the way you face. Some mark monsters, Launched, Netted or Ringing, and other skills hit marked monsters harder. Each class fights with its own weapon, and its skills need it in hand. Passive skills always work once learned. Resetting your skills is free the first time, then costs Shells.

How things work

Stats

Power, Agility, Echo and Heart start at 5 each; every level gives 4 points (L opens the stat window).
  • Power: damage and knockback (+1% a point, up to +50%).
  • Agility: damage and crit (+0.1% a point, up to +15% from stats).
  • Echo: damage and skill effects. Heart: HP and defense.
  • Recommended spends 3 points on your class's main stat and 1 on Heart; Auto does it every level.
  • Take back up to 8 points a week for free, or reset everything for 40 Shells a level (at most 2000).
  • The Bonuses tab lists every bonus you have and where it comes from.

Damage, HP and defense

A hit is (weapon attack + 2 × your level) × (1 + stat power ÷ 40), and crits hit ×1.5. Max HP is 60 + 14 × level + 9 × Heart, plus your gear. Defense is armor + 1.5 × Heart, and it takes a share off every hit, more against low-level monsters; it never blocks everything.

Levels and EXP

Monsters and quests give EXP. The level cap is 30 for now. EXP needed for the next level:

Numa's Requests

Every day Numa asks three small things, picked for your level: calm monsters, calm glitchy ones, pick up Shells, bring Notes. See them on Numa's Song Meter (top middle). Each gives EXP (a quarter of a level) and Shells; all three, a Tuning Fork. New ones come at midnight (UTC).

Golden and Silver Shells

Golden Shell A Golden Shell is worth 100 Shells, Silver Shell a Silver Shell 10. Every drop of Shells comes as Golden Shells first, then Silver, then normal ones: a drop of 254 Shells is 2 Golden, 5 Silver and 4 Shells. Each has its own sound when you pick it up.

Tough monsters

Hit a monster over and over and it toughens: stunned 3 times within 2.5 seconds, it shrugs off stuns for 2 seconds (a gold ! over its head) and fights back. It still takes the damage.

Holding keys

Hold Attack to keep swinging, or hold a skill's key to keep using it each time it's ready.

Gull Ferry

Talk to Tern in Finrest (on the ground, by the gull perch): the gulls fly you to Belly Reef or Stormtail for 100 Shells, but only to a place you've been before. You arrive at its entrance. To come back, use a Homeward Feather.

Gates

Walk into a gate to go through it. Some gates stand where you might walk into them by accident (Finrest's gate to The Spout, Fin Cliffs' gate to Stormtail and Stormtail's back to Fin Cliffs, the Barnacle Throne's): those show an Up arrow, and you press Up to go through, so you can walk past them.

Monster HP

Hit a monster and a small bar over its head shows how much HP it has left; it fades 5 seconds after the last hit.

Buffs

Breeze Tea and Numa's Blessing show as small icons under your HP. A dark shade rises over each as its time runs out, it blinks in its last seconds, and pointing at it says what it does and how long is left.

Your HP bar

A hit takes the bar down at once; the part you lost flashes, then drains away. A heal shows the new HP in green first, and the bar fills up to it. Under 10% HP the bar stays red and blinks lightly.

A new version

The game updates itself: when it starts, it checks for a newer version, downloads only what changed (usually 1 or 2 MB), restarts and carries on. If a new version comes out while you play, the server only takes the new one: a popup says so, counts down from 8 and takes you to the login screen (or press OK); restart the game and it updates. Your progress is saved. Only a new game engine needs a fresh download, and the start screen says so with the link.

Red dots

A blinking red dot after a key hint (at the bottom of the screen) means something is waiting there: new gear, points to spend, a quest to read, a book page done.

Skill cooldowns

A skill you used keeps its cooldown through gates and reconnects: changing maps doesn't make it ready again.

Sound

M turns the sound off and on (F1 for the music and sounds volumes). While it's off, the key hints along the bottom say "M sound off".

Fainting

At 0 HP you faint and lose 5% of the EXP needed for the next level, never a whole level. Press any key (or tap) to get up at the map's start. Logging out while fainted does the same.

Glitchy monsters and Notes

The Static makes some monsters glitchy: 1.8× HP and 1.5× EXP, +3 EXP for hitting one first, and they drop Notes, pieces of Numa's song. Every Note you pick up plays the next note of her melody.

The Static surge

Every 15 minutes the Static rises outside town (and outside the Barnacle King's room) for 2 minutes, after a 60-second warning: monsters come back glitchy and 4 extra glitchy ones appear, one of them golden: much tougher and much richer.

Numa's Song Meter

Give Notes at the Songstone in Finrest. Every player's Notes fill one meter (300 Notes). When it's full, Numa sings: everyone online gets Numa's Blessing, 10% more EXP from monsters for 30 minutes. Each Note you give also gives you 4 EXP.

Drops

A drop belongs to whoever did the most damage for 30 seconds, then anyone can take it. Drops fade after 2 minutes. Walk over them to pick them up. Drag an item or a piece of gear out of your bag to drop it for anyone to take: it fades after 60 seconds.

Falling

A long fall hurts a little (more than about 5 character heights): 8% of your HP and more the higher you fell, at most 35%. Never in town, and a fall never takes your last HP.

Chat and emotes

Press Enter to chat with your map (Enter on an empty line, or Esc, closes it). /w and a name whispers, /r answers, /p talks to your party. The :) button has emotes. Click a message to whisper or report. Bad words are hidden: be kind.

Friends, parties and blocking

Press F for Friends & party.
  • Friends: add them by name to see when they're online, where and at which level.
  • Party (up to 6): members on the same map share the EXP of what they defeat, with 5% more for each other member (up to +20%). Not shared with anyone fainted, away (15 seconds idle) or more than 8 levels from the monster: a strong friend can help you on your own maps, not carry you through stronger ones.
  • /p talks to your party on any map. Block someone and they can't message, invite or add you.

Elites

Every hunting map with an elite (Fin Cliffs: a Snapnacle) brings one out now and then: a glitchy champion, 1.5× bigger, with 8× a glitchy one's HP, hitting 1.5× as hard, for 6× the EXP. It always drops a piece of gear (rare or better when it can), a Barnacle, 3 Shards and 1 Tuning Fork, and 6× the Shells. One at a time; the next comes 5-9 minutes after it's defeated. A gold name tag shows over it, and a horn sounds when it appears.

Playing together

Up to 30 players share a map; when it's full, channel 2 of it opens (then 3, and so on; the minimap shows CH 2). Nobody is ever moved: to go to another channel, press F1 and pick one (the row shows only while there's more than one). The server decides every hit, drop and reward, so everyone sees the same thing.
